L’aurora boreale è un vero e proprio spettacolo della natura, un evento così suggestivo da sviluppare un turismo indipendente. L’aurora boreale infatti rientra a pieno titolo nell’elenco di “Cosa da vedere almeno una volta nella vita”, per questo sono molti i tour operator che organizzano viaggi da diverse località italiane per portarvi direttamente dove poterla ammirare dal vivo.
Ciò che rende così affascinante l’aurora boreale è anche il fatto che non è facile da raggiungere, in quanto bisogna raggiungere aree del pianeta notoriamente fredde e per di più non in estate. Tenete presente inoltre, anche una volta giunti a destinazione nel luogo giusto, e nel periodo giusto, non è detto che riusciate a vederla.

Che cos’è l’aurora boreale? Per dirla in parole povere, è un “Gioco di luci”, una sorta di “Effetto ottico”, o per essere più tecnici “Un fenomeno atmosferico”.
Anche se visibile ad occhio nudo dal nostro pianeta, in realtà le sue origini sono da cercarsi molto lontano da noi, a circa 150 milioni di chilometri di distanza. L’aurora boreale infatti è “Scatenata” dall’incontro tra le particelle (elettroni e protoni) generate dal sole, il vento solare, e la nostra ionosfera.
Il “Gioco di luce” generato da queste particelle è visibile solo nelle aree dei circoli artici a causa dei poli magnetici della terra, ovvero “Polo nord” e “Polo sud”.
Il momento migliore per assistere al fenomeno dell’aurora boreale è a ridosso degli equinozi, ovvero intorno alla fine di marzo e alle fine di settembre.
In generale, il periodo da evitare assolutamente è durante il “Sole di mezzanotte”, ovvero quando il sole non tramonta mai veramente. La presenza del sole all’orizzonte infatti impedisce la visione dell’aurora boreale.
L’orario migliore per assistere al fenomeno invece, secondo gli esperti, è tra le 21.00 e le 2 del mattino.
Ancora oggi, in molti luoghi del pianeta l’aurora boreale viene indicata con l’espressione inglese “Northern Light”, ovvero “Le luci del nord”. Vi siete mai chiesti perché?
Un motivo potrebbe essere che fino a non molto tempo fa, si pensava che l’aurora boreale non fosse altro che un riflesso generato dalla presenza degli iceberg, oppure particolari lampi. Fu solo nel 1859, a seguito di un’eccezionale attività solare, che fu realmente compreso il fenomeno, ma in realtà, non è questo il motivo per si usa l’espressione “Northern light”.
Il motivo in realtà è molto più semplice, per non dire banale. Siccome l’aurora boreale, questo spettacolare “Gioco di luci”, si è sempre manifestata sono nelle aree più a nord del pianeta, i paese limitrofi, più a sud, l’hanno sempre chiamata “Northern light”, appunto “Le luci del nord”.
Un altro particolare aneddoto sull’aurora riguarda il suo nome. Da tutti infatti viene indicata con l’espressione “Aurora boreale”, anche se in realtà è sbagliato. Il fenomeno infatti dovrebbe chiamarsi “Aurora polare” e dovrebbe cambiare il suo nome a seconda della posizione geografica, ovvero “Aurora boreale” e “Aurora Australe”.
Per assistere al fenomeno dell’aurora boreale bisogna recarsi vicino ai circoli artici, scegliendo le aeree dove si manifestazione più frequentemente.
